Developing HR Talent in the NHS (NHS South East Coast)

BCL has worked with the NHS SEC to design and deliver an HR Talent Management programme to develop two separate bands of staff; aspiring Deputy Directors and aspiring HR Business Partners. BCL’s innovative approach of intertwining both development programmes impressed the client. Both programmes challenged each group to think about the future development of the profession in the NHS and the necessary skills and mindsets that would bring about success. The connections between the programmes involved the senior staff designing the development programme for the juniors and sharing their progress to date on business projects under the QIPP agenda. Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Performance continue to be essential priorities for NHS staff delivering and purchasing healthcare and our HR Showcase event enabled 70 HR staff from across the South East Coast to meet and share current and future best practice.

This large event enabled the senior staff to set out ‘their stall’ to inform and create a dialogue about their business projects and promote enthusiasm for challenging how HR delivers work in organisations. There were a total of 25 projects completed and the HR Showcase event enabled 45 junior staff to explore all the innovative practices that were involved in bringing the projects to life and give appreciative feedback to the project leads on elements of the work they had found most inspiring.

Leadership Development Programme – RSA (formerly RoyalSun Alliance)

Berkshire has worked collaboratively with RSA since 2007 to design and deliver a global Leadership Development Programme aimed at leaders who have demonstrated potential to transition into senior leadership over a 2 - 5 year period. It is identified across the Group as the key process to validate, develop and retain talent for future promotion opportunities.

So far, the programme has been experienced by over 150 delegates from Canada, Scandinavia, the UK, Ireland, Italy, Latin America, Central Eastern Europe and Asia Middle East. Senior managers nominate high potential employees to attend a 9 month programme built around 3 central modules which are designed around building leadership capability across 3 key areas

1)     Business Leadership: Leading commercially and adopting a strategic mindset.
2)     Growth Leadership: Leading growth businesses, managing change and innovation.
3)     People Leadership: Building teams, leadership brand, leading and engaging individuals.

The programme uses a blended approach to learning. Participants experience a Development Centre, 1:1 feedback and coaching, Business Coaching, Project Based Action Learning, psychometric diagnostics, team based experiential learning alongside the structure of the 3 central modules. This mix of learning methodologies enables participants to maximise their learning across a broad curriculum from theoretical frameworks used in mapping and designing Business Strategy to exploring personal behaviours and emotional intelligence when defining their own Authentic Leadership.

At the end of the programme participants prepare and present a business case to high light the return on investment. These presentations prove a powerful and valuable way of evaluating the programme with each participant telling their own individual story of how they have shifted during the programme and what that has meant for the business.

The client is extremely delighted with the impact of the programme to date. It has enabled the Group to identify, retain and promote key talent in line with the values and goals of the business. The business projects enable sizeable questions/problems/opportunities/issues to be addressed without consultancy costs and ensure the strategic element of the programme reflects current business conditions. The personal learning presentations by participants during the last module confirm that the programme yields a significant return on investment for individual participants and this is supported by line managers. The client recently submitted the programme to the CIPD Awards 2010 where it has been shortlisted to the final four in the category of Organisational Learning.
