Indicators that you need to pay more attention to the well-being and work-life balance of your workforce and to your external reputation are:

  • People at all levels typically work very long hours
  • Staff surveys show that people don’t feel sufficiently valued
  • Out-dated systems and processes leading to inefficiencies
  • Old style leadership behaviours
  • Employees habitually not taking their full holiday entitlement 
  • Resistance to changes in working practices
  • Low level of flexible working offered and/or low take-up of options
  • Increasing levels of sickness and stress-related absence
  • Women, black and minority ethnic staff conspicuous by their absence or scarcity in management roles
  • Little interest or activity in community engagement and charitable support
  • Few links with the local community
  • Problems in recruiting good employees in a competitive market
  • Low level of employee secondments.
