Executive Coaching Case Studies

Executive Coaching in the Police Service
BCL supply one third of the accredited executive coaches for one constabulary, to provide advice and support to the professional development of chief and senior officers (Superintendent level and above, officers and staff). Coaching is offered to all at this level, and taken up on a voluntary basis, with coachees selecting their preferred coach from publicly available CVs.
Our coaching here typically provides a mix of personal and career development. We use a wide range of tools and approaches, with the overall aim of helping coachees to understand themselves better and to give them greater choice, skill and confidence in how they manage themselves, others and their career. Our coaches have a strong belief that coaching is about helping people to become the best version of themselves that they can be, by building on their strengths and developing their own style in an authentic way.
To date we have helped chief and senior officers to develop in specific areas of personal leadership and to prepare for and pass assessment for promotion, with 100% success rate. Specific areas we have helped coachees develop include confidence and personal impact, influencing and leading different personalities.  One coachee commented:
I found my personal coach to be extremely valuable with her ability to reflect upon core issues and to challenge my personal perspectives. She very quickly identified areas of focus in my preparation and personal development and provided supporting material that accurately targeted these aspects enhancing my self reflection and changing my perception of certain key issues. She was encouraging, supportive and above all able to get to the 'heart of the matter' by listening carefully, reflecting back to me and steering me to my own resolutions.”

Executive Coaching
This strategically crucial central government Directorate required its top team to receive executive coaching as part of a wider change initiative. Each member of the Directing Group was coached by our consultants towards helping them develop their own capabilities in dealing with the large scale structural changes their Directorate was undergoing. Working on a one-to-one basis with the same coaching team enabled the coaches to both fully understand each individual’s requirements as well as gain a strong understanding of the broader dynamic amongst the team and had a wider view on different perceptions.
By working with them over the length of the change initiative, some 18 months, the Directors were able to recognise any skills and behaviours within themselves that needed to be developed further as well as actions they needed to take in order to lead their teams through the changes as effectively as swiftly as possible, ensuring cost savings were made without any loss in service to their stakeholders.
The most recent staff survey, from within the Directorate, taken towards the end of the change initiative reported a 79% increase in the effectiveness of the leadership experienced and evaluation investigations have revealed for every £1 spent of the change initiative, £3 were saved in costs.
